Do you ever feel inundated by the paper flow in education? I certainly do.
Even though I use Google Classroom to distribute, collect, grade, and return assignments to my students, I still feel like I’m constantly reading notes or accountability activities to make sure that my students have actually done what I’ve asked them to do!! I asked myself earlier this week whether or not I’m grading their knowledge of the concept or whether or not they’ve done what I asked them to do…two different things.
Am I alone in this headache?
Here’s how my flipped video procedures works…right now:
- I assign the video and a reinforcing/accountability activity through Google Classroom
- I give the students 1-2 nights to view the video and complete the activity
- Students complete the activity (which includes their notes) and submit via Google Classroom
Sounds great, right? Here’s the problem I’ve encountered…I’m not only grading students’ proof that they understand the subject, but am also grading their notes…which means TOO much grading of assignments that do not truly assess their knowledge of the concept!
Therefore, my procedure will change SLIGHTLY…
- I assign the video and an accountability activity through Google Classroom. Examples of these activities can be found on my Social Studies Flipped Videos and Activities page.
- I create a brief quiz using Google Forms for students to complete AFTER they watch the video. If students score at least 80% on that quiz, they are able to move on to the activity in class. If they don’t score at least an 80% on the quiz, they have to watch the video again in class, AND will most likely be behind on the activities/assignments that their classmates are completing in class.
- Students submit the accountability activity that includes their notes through Classroom.
- I grade the quiz created by Google Forms…which gives me better indication of their understanding of the concept!
I’m sure my procedures will change MANY times as my students and I figure out our flipped classroom.
After all, as Aaron Sams said, “there Is No Such Thing as THE Flipped Class.”
