Well…here we are! The first day of school is upon us. My summer FLEW by and I don’t know if I accomplished ANYTHING I set out to do.
Every year, it seems like I start out with the exact same activity on the first day. “Please complete this index card, making sure to include the following information…your name, your parent’s name and contact information, blah blah blah.” I don’t know why I do this. I have NEVER looked at it! This year, I’m going to change it up, slightly.
Here’s my plan:
While I’m taking attendance at the beginning of the hour (which I often forget to do!) students will find one partner and conduct an interview. Below are the questions I will ask:
- What is your partner’s name?
- What is their favorite subject in school?
- Does your partner participate in any extracurricular activities? Sports, community or church groups, jobs, etc
- What is your partner’s favorite SCHOOL APPROPRIATE movie? (I always have to emphasize the “school appropriate” part with upper classmen!)
- What are your partner’s plans for after graduation?
The last question I always include on my outdated index card activity is “is there anything else you feel I should know about you as a student?” This last tidbit of information will still be asked…just in a different manner.
The first day the students are able to use a computer or their Chromebook (whichever comes first) they will complete a practice assignment in Google Classroom. This will allow them to communicate concerns they have, as well as any information about their learning that they MAY not want to share in front of the class. Please feel free to use the “Getting to Know You” Doc in your classroom!
Have an excellent school year!
Thanks for reading 🙂
