3 Essential Twitter Hashtags for Teachers

I doubt any of these hashtags need an introduction…that’s the beauty of hashtags. They’re fairly self-explanatory. I LOVE these three hashtags because I can “connect” with other educators without having to leave my couch. You know as well as I do that teaching can sometimes be an isolating profession. We rarely, if ever, have time to actually discuss ideas with our colleagues. To quote one of my favorite movies, sometimes teachers feel like a “lone reed, standing tall, waving boldly, in the corrupt sands of commerce…” Ahh, “You’ve Got Mail” 🙂

Maybe we’re not waving boldly in the corrupt sands of commerce, but you get the idea. Twitter and other social media outlets can help teachers communicate with great minds in education, share ideas, learn new strategies, have meaningful conversations, cement opinions, and so much more.

In addition to following education trends through Twitter, I also love to follow news sources, like CNN, MSNBC, New York Times, Washington Post, The Today Show and the like. These media outlets give Twitterers (new word?) like us access to “on the ground” information which can help keep us up to date with current events and issues. Many of us don’t have time to sit down during the day and watch the news. I don’t even have time to read a full story on a website. These sources provide us with quick, concise, and hopefully accurate information that we can communicate to our students. I love when a student interrupts a class period by saying, “Mrs. Petty, I just got an update from CNN on Twitter and ……” Sure, it interrupts what was sure to be a mind-blowing lecture or activity, but students are using technology constructively to engage in the world around them. AWESOME!
