If you watch Disney Junior or Nick Junior as much as I do, then you have most likely seen a commercial for ABCmouse.com! If your kids use an iPad or iPhone as much as mine do, you have most likely come across the ABCmouse app!
If you teach young children, or have young children, you seriously have to check out this program!
ABCmouse is developed by distinguished educators and is FUN for kids to use. My daughters LOVE the app for iPad and iPhone and can be heard singing “Bobby Bugsby has a bike…” which is one of the great letter songs on the app. When my kids use the app, they think they are just watching fun music videos. What they are actually doing is using music to learn letters and their sounds and expanding their vocabularies by singing new words. It’s a win-win!
Since I teach high school, I don’t normally post about technology that doesn’t directly affect me in my classroom (I know that sounds bad!). However, as a mother of two young girls, ABCmouse has a wonderful place in my household, hence this post!
ABCmouse is currently FREE for public schools, and is temporarily FREE for private schools and preschool programs. The cost for the rest of us is something like $7.95/month which is really a steal if you think about everything you get with this program!
There is also an ABCmouse YouTube channel, that includes tons of fun kids songs! Check out an example below

The online curriculum is geared toward the preschool through kindergarten age group. However, this could definitely be used for remedial work for struggling students, enrichment or advanced work for younger students.
I really like the printable option…because we all know our kids need to “unplug” sometimes. The printables encourage kids to keep learning even when they’re off the app or the website.
Every teacher can recognize that the shifts involved in the Common Core standards require kids to be readers and writers at a much younger age. This fun program can help!
Do you use ABCmouse in your classroom? In your house? How you do you like the program?
More on educational technology in the middle and upper grades next time..I promise!
Thanks for reading 🙂
